El trato de Árgel, by Cervantes, edited by Kathleen Thornton Spinnenweber.
Cervantes based this four-part drama on his own true five-year ordeal as a captive slave in Algiers when he was held for ransom by Barbary pirates. El trato de Árgel follows the experiences of the characters Aurelio and Sylvia, two betrothed young people taken prisoner in Algiers. Written soon after his return from captivity (25 years before he wrote Don Quijote), Cervantes includes interesting dialogue about conditions as a slave in Northern Africa.
