"The English Schism," by Calderón, translated by Dakin Matthews

The historical events of King Henry VIII’s divorce from Catherine of Aragon and marriage to Anne Boleyn are dramatized in The English Schism (La cisma de Inglaterra, c. 1627) by Calderón, who saw a parallel with Spanish figures in power at the time the play was written: King Philip IV and his powerful advisor Olivares are reflected in the characters of Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey. Matthews delivers a lively new translation of this early work of one of Spain’s foremost dramatists.

This volume is part of the Diversifying the Classics project at UCLA, which fosters awareness and appreciation of the Hispanic Golden Age and gives theater professionals the materials and tools to explore its rich tradition.
