The mid-18th century then-controversial novel "Manon Lescaut," by Abbé Prévost describes the misadventures of a young nobleman and his gold-digging lover in the time of Louis the Sun King. The story takes place in France and Louisiana where it ends in tragedy. Prévost's novel inspired quite a few musical works, ballets, and films, most notably "Manon Lescaut" by 19th century Italian composer Giacomo Puccini.
