"Don Quixote: Hero or Fool? Remixed" by John J. Allen
The objective of the study—in quixotic contradiction with many of the premises of an impressive body of theory-based criticism produced in recent decades—is “to elucidate the ways in which Cervantes guides his readers in an evolving ethical perspective towards Don Quixote,… with the goal being not simply to establish yet another, more sophisticated judgment of Don Quixote, but rather to see the various bases for these judgments as parts of a coherent and integral interpretation.”
Don Quixote: Hero or Fool? Remixed merges Don Quixote: Hero or Fool? (1969) with Don Quixote: Hero or Fool? Part II (1979), both published by the University Presses of Florida. Chapter 1 of Part II has been incorporated into Chapter I of its predecessor, the introductions and conclusions of the two books have been modified and combined, and a number of minor changes and adjustments have been made at other points in the text.
In a 2005 centenary collection of essays published in Chile, Don Quixote: Hero or Fool? was characterized by Nicolás Salerno and Pablo Tenekedjian as one of the “visiones más significativas realizadas desde el ámbito académico anglosajón en torno a la principal obra de Cervantes, Don Quijote.” This Study in Narrative Technique, the subtitle of Part I, has been included in the select bibliographies recommended for further reading in E. C. Riley’s Oxford edition of the Jarvis translation (1992), in Edward Friedman’s Signet version of the Starkie translation (2000), in Diana de Armas Wilson’s Norton Critical Edition of Raffel’s translation (1998), and in John Rutherford’s Penguin translation (2000), and it continues to be cited in many current scholarly studies of Cervantes’ masterpiece.
