Crisis in Buenos Aires: Women Bearing Witness, edited by Cynthia Schmidt-Cruz (University of Delaware), photography by Silvina Frydlewsky.
This unique book includes essays, poetry, and photography of a severe economic downturn in Argentina in December, 2001. The circumstances provide a cautionary tale for our own times. From the preface:
December 2001 witnessed tumultuous events in Argentina, precipitated by the news that Argentina would default payment on its international debt. Bank accounts were frozen, people lost their life savings, and street protests turned to violence. A crisis in leadership led to five presidents in less than two weeks. Many middle class Argentines slipped into poverty, and thousands were reduced to scavenging in the trash in order to survive.

What all contributors to the book have in common is their desire to put a human face on the crisis and to express their hope that Argentina will continue to progress beyond those turbulent days of December 2001. By using art forms to communicate and disseminate socio-economic reality, this book aims to recover and pay tribute to the creative resistance of the people of Argentina.
