The enigmatic 12th century poet Marie de France is known primarily for her collection of twelve narrative poems ("lais"), notable for their celebration of love, individuality of character, and vividness of description, hallmarks of the emerging literature of the times. She is considered by scholars to be the first woman known to write francophone verse.
