Collection: UCLA Center for 17th- and 18th-Century Studies: The Comedia in Translation and Performance

Since 2014, UCLA Professor Barbara Fuchs has directed a program called Diversifying the Classics, promoting the comedia to Los Angeles audiences and beyond by addressing issues of translation and adaptation, connecting academics with practitioners, and hosting performances.

Juan de la Cuesta Hispanic Monographs is pleased to publish the original English translations from the Diversifying the Classics working group. Of course, the "classics" are already "diversified," but with this series we hope to widen the American drama canon to include works previously only available in Spanish. As the UCLA group brings more Spanish drama—all wildly popular in their time and home countries—to the English speaking American public, we discover a wealth of humor, issues, and topics that are startlingly relevant to the 21st century audience.
